Anaheim Unified School District in California recently agreed to order over 100 copies of high schooler Rahil Luthra’s book The Scam of the Sugar Farm.

This children’s book is loosely based on the Delhi Land and Finance (DLF) land grab case of 2013 in Haryana, India. Corrupt politicians and businessmen used Section 4 of Indian law to unfairly convince Indian farmers to sell their land for unfairly cheap prices. Millions of dollars were made by these corrupt politicians and businessmen. There are documented numbers for these DLF cases, but there are thousands of cases like this in India and worldwide every year.

During a trip to India in 2016, Rahil Luthra was inspired to write this story when he witnessed his uncle break down in tears after explaining he could no longer financially support his own family. He had owned a farm in Amipur and had been coerced to sell his land for a quarter of what it was worth. Rahil realized that this wasn’t an isolated event. Since local residents had not been educated in finance nor have a basic knowledge of the local laws, this is a common occurrence.

Rahil Luthra is a high school student at Oxford Academy, the number one high school in California and 11th in the US (Source: US News 2020). After graduation, Rahil plans to pursue a career in financial law. He hopes to create a task force to help people in remote villages of India stand up for their legal rights.

Luthra is an active ambassador to the CRY America Foundation, which educates children in developing nations. He has personally raised thousands of dollars for the cause and hopes that others will join the fight to end financial illiteracy globally.

The Scam of the Sugar Farm was published by Artist Madrid Books this past April and is available for purchase through Amazon. All Author Royalties from book sales will be donated by Luthra to the CRY America Foundation.
