The HOPE Contest Awards proudly celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades of promoting responsible pet ownership and care to students across Miami-Dade County. Founded by Dr. Martin S. Karp, a long-time advocate for education and animal welfare, the contest is a countywide initiative designed to teach the next generation about the importance of being compassionate and responsible pet stewards.

In collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Animal Services, and the Humane Society of Greater Miami (HSGM), the HOPE Contest Awards invites students to develop creative campaigns that raise awareness about the community’s role in pet care, overpopulation issues, and the importance of adoption. Students participating in the contest are encouraged to explore innovative approaches to inspire action and create positive change in their communities.

Dr. Karp’s vision for the HOPE Contest was to intertwine education with practical life skills. “Teaching students about pet ownership isn’t just about animals; it’s about nurturing responsibility, empathy, and understanding the long-term commitment required to care for another living being,” said Dr. Karp.

Throughout the years, Dr. Karp has introduced several groundbreaking pet-related initiatives within Miami-Dade County, all aimed at improving animal welfare and supporting pet owners:

  • Taking Care of Pets Initiative: This educational program was developed to address the county’s pet overpopulation problem and stress the significance of responsible pet ownership. The initiative includes lesson plans and public service announcements to ensure students understand the impact of pet care on the community.

  • Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelters: Dr. Karp was instrumental in establishing pet-friendly hurricane shelters at Highland Oaks Middle School and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High, ensuring families and their pets can safely shelter together during natural disasters.
